What Is Radiant Heat?

One of the most comfortable and widely sought-after forms of home and commercial heating is radiant heating. These systems are highly conductive and rely on convection to move heat into a room. Heat transfers to the walls or floors and rises into the air, so that the entire room is as comfortable as you want it to be. Nothing beats the warm and cozy heat of a radiant heating system.

At Dynamic Mechanical Heating & Air Conditioning, we install and service radiant heating systems in Bristol. Two potential uses for radiant heat are detailed below.

Radiant Panels

Radiant flooring and radiant panels are designed in very different ways, which is why we’ve separated them here. Radiant panels may use a hydronic heating system to send water through the walls, but most do not because the risk of leaks and water damage is too high. More often, these are aluminum panels positioned behind the walls and heated by electricity. Electric heat is typically more expensive to operate, but you may find yourself using it sparingly since they heat up a room so quickly.

Radiant Floor Heating

Electric cables may be installed underneath the floorboards, but this is not often cost-efficient. A hydronic radiant floor system consists of both a boiler and a set of pipes underneath the floorboards. The boiler heats up the water and sends it underneath the floorboards, and through convection, the heat transfers to your floors.

This type of installation comes with many benefits besides energy savings. You may be able to install a zoning system, routing each set of tubing through a control board, so that you can control the temperature in each room individually of the others. And imagine the comforting feeling of stepping onto a heated floor when you rise out of bed each morning. However, the cost of installation may be high initially as it will involve some renovations to the home.
