Now that the winter weather is starting to take hold, despite a relatively mild start to the season, you need to be thinking about the challenges that you may face in heating your home throughout the coldest time of the year. You want to live comfortably, of course, which is why you have a good heating system installed in your home in the first place. However, there is more to your comfort than just the temperature in your home. You must also maintain great indoor air quality throughout your living space if you hope to live in a comfortable and healthful environment. Using a heat recovery ventilator in Glastonbury, CT can help you to do so.

What Does an HRV Do?

An HRV, or heat recovery ventilator, operates as a mechanical ventilation system for your home. It brings in fresh air from outdoors, and vents out stale air from within your home. How is that any different than simply throwing open the windows in your house, you may wonder? Well, the HRV actually pre-conditions incoming air, so as to recover the energy that you've used to heat or cool the outgoing air. During the winter season, the air in your home is warm, but it also gets quite stale. As the HRV brings in cold but fresh air, the heat from the outgoing air is applied to it, pre-warming it to take some strain off of your heater. During the summer, the HRV vents out stale, cool air, and the heat from the incoming air is transferred to the outgoing air.

Benefits of Heat Recovery Ventilation

Heat recovery ventilation allows you to enjoy the best of both worlds: great indoor air quality without sacrificing efficiency. Ventilating one's home is necessary for protecting the quality of the air therein. However, cracking windows will allow for a lot of energy waste. By using an HRV, you can keep the air fresh without driving up your heating and cooling costs or compromising your comfort.
