When to Schedule Boiler Repair

Here in Hartford, many homes use boilers as their heating system. When something goes wrong with your boiler, you want the issue fixed fast, especially when a cold front can constitute a major danger to your home and family. That’s why it’s important to anticipate breakdowns before they occur and call in a good repair service as soon as possible. An ounce of prevention beats a pound of cure as they say, and if you know when to schedule boiler repair, you can correct a small and relatively inexpensive problem instead of a larger and costlier one.

Here are a few signs to look for:

  • Leaks. Leaks can occur in the boiler itself, or along any of the pipes and radiators that make up the system. In many cases, you can spot the leaks by the puddles of water, but some leaks are too small to drip, instead allowing the water to evaporate. In those cases, watch for a drop in pressure in the affected area, which indicates a loss of water somewhere along the line.
  • Rust and corrosion. Most boilers contain an anode rod or similar measures to fight corrosion in the system. When the anode rod hasn’t been replaced in a long time, however, rust can form where it isn’t supposed to, and may form anyway if you have an older system. In any case, you need to address any signs of rust immediately before they create a breach.
  • High pressure. The boiler has a pressure valve allowing you to monitor the water pressure inside of it. If it gets higher than normal, it likely signals a problem, and you need to schedule a repair service before it results in a rupture.
