What Types of Sump Pumps Are Available?

Most homeowners are surprised to find that their sump pump is one of the most important appliances in their home. Without a properly functioning sump pump, your basement can become severely flooded, resulting in damage to other appliances and items in storage. Even if you were to avoid a flooding situation, your sump pump reduces dampness that could lead to mold and mildew.

In addition to protecting your home from inclement weather conditions, your sump pump drains groundwater from under and around your basement floor, reducing the probability of your basement floor cracking and shifting from water pressure. So now you know what your sump pump does, but did you know there are two different types? Keep reading to learn the differences between the two.

Pedestal Sump Pump

This type of sump pump is divided into two parts and utilizes a standalone motor that is installed above the floor of the basement, in addition to a hose that is fed down into the sump reservoir. The pedestal pump is less costly than its counterpart, the submersible sump pump.

Since the motor of the pedestal sump pump is not submerged in water when the sump reservoir is full, this pump is not susceptible to water damage in the motor. Due to this, pedestal sump pumps have been known to last 2 to 3 times longer than submersible pumps.

Submersible Sump Pump

A submersible sump pump has an integrated design, placing both the motor and the pump inside an enclosed container. In general, a submersible sump pump is available in a larger horsepower capacity than a pedestal sump pump. This means that larger submersible sump pumps can pump out water faster than pedestal type pumps.

This type of pump is designed to be placed in the sump reservoirs and get wet, which keeps it out of the way of any fixtures or furniture that might be in your basement. This placement also reduces noise heard inside the home.
