What is an HRV?

There are certain struggles that all homeowners face which can seem, at times, impossible to overcome. The quest for great energy efficiency while also maintaining high indoor air quality is one that many homeowners are tempted to write off as unachievable. We here at Dynamic Mechanical Heating & Air Conditioning know better, though, and we encourage any homeowners considering giving up this pursuit to reconsider. With the use of an HRV (heat recovery ventilator), you can sufficiently ventilate your home and maintain great indoor air quality, without having to sacrifice energy efficiency in doing so. Give a member of our team a call today to learn more about our ERV services in Hartford, CT.

What is an HRV?

In order to understand why you ought to consider the use of a heat recovery ventilator in your home, you must first understand what such a device is, as well as how it operates. An HRV is a mechanical ventilation device. Essentially, it acts as a heat exchanger between two air streams: one leaving your house, and another coming. The exchange of heat between these two streams means that you can ventilate your home without wasting the energy that you used to heat or cool it already. During the summer season, for instance, the cool but stale air leaving your home absorbs some of the heat in the air coming in, which is fresh. This means that the air is precooled, and that you are not throwing away the energy that you used in cooling the air leaving the house. The opposite is true in the winter, when the incoming cold air is prewarmed by the outgoing stale air.

Benefits of Using an HRV

The major benefit of using an HRV is that you don't have to worry about paying more to heat or cool your home just because you want to ventilate it sufficiently. Additionally, you can expect air of a higher quality when you ventilate your home regularly. Plus, the reduced strain on your HVAC system means that it will not incur as much general wear and tear during operation. For all of these reasons, you are wise to consider the use of a heat recovery ventilator in your home.
