Using Natural Gas Safely: Signs of Leaks

Delivering Quality Comfort to the Homes and Businesses of Hartford County and New Haven County
|

family-outdoorsThere is no denying that natural gas is one of the most convenient, efficient, and clean-burning of all fossil fuels in use today. For all of the benefits that natural gas has to offer homeowners, however, one must remember that natural gas is still a combustible fuel being piped into their homes. There is some inherent risk in using any type of fuel, and gas leaks could develop in any system.

Obviously, the best way in which to minimize any risks associated with using natural gas in your home is to schedule your natural gas line services, as well as service for gas-burning systems and appliances, with trained professionals. Even so, you should be able to recognize the signs that you have an issue with your gas line in Farmington, CT. Here are a few potential signs of trouble to look out for.

Is My Gas Line Leaking?

Natural gas is not a byproduct, like carbon monoxide. We willingly pipe it into our homes. This gives us the opportunity to take certain safety precautions before doing so, and adding the trademark rotten egg, sulfuric odor to the gas is the major one. If you smell this odor on your property or in your home, contact us or the appropriate authorities immediately. There are many other warning signs that you may notice, though they may not be quite as obvious as this odor is.

  • Dying vegetation in a specific area of your property could indicate a gas leak. If the gas is leaking, then it could actually be poisoning the grass and vegetation in its vicinity. Do not discount the possibility by convincing yourself that it is simply the result of subpar landscaping.
  • Dirt blowing up from the ground could also indicate that there is a gas leak on your property. If you notice this phenomenon on your property, don't just assume it's the result of wind. The force of the gas leaking out of the pipe could be behind this propulsion.
  • Warning signs aren't just those symptoms that you can see or smell. You should keep your ears open for signs of trouble, as well. If you hear a hissing sound coming from any gas-burning appliance in your home, then you may actually be hearing the sound of natural gas escaping. This will probably be accompanied by the smell of the natural gas, of course, but you should not discount any single irregularity.

There are many reasons as to why a gas line may develop a leak. They can be damaged during construction around the property, appliances may be shifted in a way that compromises connection, and so on. The important thing to remember is that acting fast is always in your best interest. Many utilities, such as CNG, have gas leak only phone numbers to call in the event of an emergency. We are here 24/7 to handle any gas line repairs that you may require. This is simply not the type of problem that can wait until Monday morning.
