working-on-a-water-heaterWhen you think of the appliances in your home, where does mind go first? The refrigerator in the kitchen? The washing machine and clothes dryer in the laundry room? While you certainly have a hands-on relationship with these appliances, there is one that you don't really have much interaction with that is nonetheless incredibly important. This is your water heater.

After all, every time you use that washing machine, you're relying on your water heater to provide it with hot water, right? The same is true when you take a shower or run the dishwasher, or even just wash up after a hard day at work. The water heater in your home works hard each and every day, so you need to know that you have the right one installed in your residence. We'll help to ensure that this is the case. Choosing Your New Water Heater

Part of this boils down to ensuring that you have the right amount of hot water on-hand at all times. Having a professional size your water heater is an integral step in the purchasing and installation process. The size of the water heater is not the only factor to consider, of course. Before you even get to that point, you should be thinking about what type of water heater you'll be using in your property.

Tank Water Heaters

The tank water heater is the old standby, and is the preferred method of water heating in countless homes and commercial properties throughout the country. That being said, this old standby also allows for the development of a potential problem: standby energy loss.

When you use a tank water heater, you are storing a reservoir of hot water in the system's tank. Now, having this reservoir comes in very handy, especially in those instances when a lot of hot water may be needed at once. However, it is possible for the heat in the water to transfer through the tank and into the cooler air surrounding it. This is called standby energy loss. Modern tanks are more efficient than ever, and can usually have insulating products added to them, but it is something to consider.

Tankless Water Heaters

Tankless water heaters don't suffer standby energy loss, because they don't actually store any hot water at all. Instead, tankless systems heat water on-demand, as it is called for. Cold water passes through the system and is heated en-route to its destination.

While this helps to eliminate the concern surrounding standby energy loss, it is important to note that tankless water heaters are more easily overwhelmed than properly sized tank water heaters when faced with high demand. In homes, or particularly in commercial settings with high hot water demand, multiple units may be used. Tankless water heaters are more expensive, but their longer lifespan and greater efficiency certainly makes them an option to consider.
