Monday, March 19th, 2018

water-heater-technicianThere are some people out there in every industry that are constantly going to try and sell you upgrades, more expensive equipment, warranties that amount to very little, and so on. We certainly want to make sure that you have the best equipment for your personal needs and that you enjoy the best performance that that equipment has to offer, but the decision about what types of appliances you use in your home is ultimately up to you as the homeowner.

You may have heard about tankless water heaters, and the many benefits that they have to offer. We agree with much of what you probably know. These systems last a long time, they’re very efficient, they save space, etc. However, they are not the replacement for tank water heaters. They are an alternative to tank water heaters. There is no single water heater that is going to fit everyone’s needs, and that is why it is so important to consider all available options.

How Does a Tankless Water Heater Work?

Friday, March 20th, 2015

Think about all of the ways you use hot water. It’s not just for showering: you need hot water for washing your hands, rinsing the dishes, doing your laundry, and for other cleaning, cooking, and grooming tasks. In most homes, you can expect to turn on a hot water tap and feel the warmth in a matter of seconds. But have you ever stopped to think about how this works?

Most homes have a conventional storage tank water heater installed, the type that includes a large tank that is usually concealed from view but takes up quite a bit of space. Furthermore, these systems must stay heated at all times so that hot water is consistently available. A flame remains lit at all times in order to keep the burner hot, or an electric heating element is activated throughout the day. This means that you’re paying for energy that often goes unused, as hot water simply stays stagnant in the tank for most of the day.

Tankless water heaters eliminate this problem because they only switch on when you turn on a hot water tap in the home. When you turn on your shower, a computer alerts the heating elements to activate. These heat up a heat exchanger inside of the system. Then, as water pressure forces the water through the unit, it heats up quickly to meet your demands as it passes through the heat exchanger and finally flows out to the pipes.

Tankless water heaters are compact and powerful. However, in some cases, you may need to install two if there is a particularly high hot water demand in your home. Furthermore, some people complain about long wait times for tankless hot water in their homes, but new units should not have much of a problem with this. All in all, tankless water heaters are a very efficient choice and the initial cost is often upset over a matter of years.

Tankless water heaters may be the right choice for you, but they’re not best for every home. Be sure to consult with a technician, like the experienced professionals at Dynamic Mechanical Heating & Air Conditioning before choosing your new water heater. We can help you to select and size your new unit and install it for you so that you don’t have to think about any step of the process.

We wanted to share some of the more common ones that we see so that you can recognize problems early and call for service. Give us a call if you’re having any problems with your water heater or tankless water heater.

Hartford, CT Water Heater Repair: Common Issues

All the use that your water heater gets can cause it to develop a few common problems.

  • Leaks – It should come as no surprise that one of the most common repairs that we get called for is leaks. Any piece of equipment that handles a lot of water is likely to eventually start to leak. Sometimes the pressure inside the tank can become too much which would cause leaks to form in the tank itself. But many times it’s just one of the gaskets or valves leading into the tank that goes bad.
  • Not enough hot water – Another common problem is insufficient hot water. If you aren’t getting enough hot water in your home it could be caused by a couple common things. It might be that your water heater is too small which means that you’ll likely have to replace it. But it could be that the burner is out, that the dip tube has come loose or that there is sediment on the bottom of the tank keeping the heat from the burner from getting to the water.
  • Rust – No homeowner ever wants to hear that their water heater is rusted because it usually cannot be fixed. This problem often happens because the anode rod inside has deteriorated. The anode rod is there to absorb the small electric currents in the water that cause rust. When it gets eaten away, then rust can start to form on the tank.

Whether you have a tank water heater or a tankless water heater, call Dynamic Mechanical today for Hartford, CT water heater repairs.
