Radiant heating has become very popular with homeowners over the last several years. Depending on the type of radiant heating you use, the system can be part of a boiler heating system or a stand-alone electrical system. There are benefits to be gained from both types of radiant heating, as we’ll outline below, but to truly enjoy the benefits of any radiant system, it’s important to hire professionals to perform the installation. Dynamic Mechanical Heating & Air Conditioning has been performing radiant heating installation in Southington, CT since 2006. We have the certified and trained technicians who can help you with your heating installation so call us today.

Types of Radiant Heating

As we mentioned above, there are two ways radiant heating can heat your home: via hot water or steam from a boiler, or via electrical cables. But there are some choices when it comes to installation:

  • Electrical radiant floor heating – there are two ways in which the electrical cables can be used for radiant floor heating: a “wet” installation, in which the electric cables are laid on the top of wet cement creating a radiant slab when it dries, or an electrically-conductive plastic mat that is installed directly under your flooring.

  • Hydronic radiant floor heating – hydronic floor heating uses hot water to heat. The hot water flows through durable, flexible plastic tubing that is installed beneath your flooring.

  • Radiant panels – radiant panels are installed in walls and/or ceilings. They can be either electric or hydronic, but electric is usually preferred. Radiant panels are typically made of aluminum; this type of radiant heating has the quickest response time but also the lowest capacity for heating.

Benefits of Radiant Heating

  • Very quiet system – the only sound you may hear from a radiant system is the boiler as it fires; otherwise, the distribution of the heat is silent.

  • No lost heating from ductwork – heating loss with ductwork can be significant – up to 30% of your home’s total air loss. With a radiant system, the possibility of this kind of heat loss is eliminated.

  • Easily zoned – with either electric or hot water, it is easy to zone a radiant heating system as compared to a system with ductwork.
