If you’re looking alternative ways to heat and cool your home, you may have heard about geothermal systems. They draw upon the constant temperature of the earth itself to both warm and cool your home. It requires a fairly extensive installation process and usually a large swath of property as well, but the results are worth the initial efforts. Here in Southington, CT,geothermal energy may be just what you need to stay cool and help the environment as well. How does geothermal cooling work? We’re provided a quick breakdown below.

Once you get down about five or six feet under the ground, the earth’s temperature remains at a constant 55 degrees or so no matter how warm or cool the weather above it may be. That allows for a heat transfer to take place between the earth and the coolant in the geothermal system. Coiled tubes are buried beneath the earth and a mixture of water and antifreeze is pumped through it. The hot liquid passes through the coils and the heat bleeds off into the surrounding earth. The cooled liquid then moves back into your home, where it pulls heat out of the nearby air. The cool air can then be blown into your house with a fan, and the heated liquid re-enters the coils where the process starts all over again.

The process is incredibly efficient because you aren’t actually creating any cool air. You’re simply facilitating a heat exchange with the earth, which costs nothing. Beyond a little electricity to pump the liquid and run the blower fan, a geothermal cooling system needs very little energy. That saves you a great deal of money on monthly bills, as well as giving the environment a break.
