How Do I Use My Thermostat?

Years ago, when basic slide or round dial thermostats were the norm, their use was pretty simple. You just had to align the temperature indicator with the temperature setting that you were aiming for. Of course, this operation actually left a lot of wiggle room between what temperature you intended to set, and what temperature you actually wound up setting. Modern technology allows for more accurate and convenient temperature control in the form of programmable thermostats. While not too complicated, it is important to be sure that you are using your programmable thermostat in Southington, CT properly. Here are a few basic tips for doing so.

  1. Modern programmable thermostats will have set-points that are designated for energy efficiency. Make sure that you leave your temperature set at these set points for a good stretch of time each day. If you are concerned that the set point is not going to leave your home feeling comfortable enough, consider using these points when you are out of the house at work each day. You may also want to go back to the set point late at night, when you are in bed and unlikely to notice the change as much.
  2. Use override settings sparingly. Sometimes you may need to cool your home to a lower temperature than you normally would. That's fine, and the override will be removed in the next stage of the cooling program. Just remember that overriding the program itself will result in more energy use, and that kind of negates a big purpose of using a programmable thermostat in the first place.
  3. Do not "crank" your thermostat up or down. Setting your thermostat to 40 degrees on a 90 degree day is not going to cool your home faster. Your AC is either on or off: that's it. All that this type of setting does is give your AC a goal that it cannot meet, and put a lot of unnecessary strain on the system.
