As long as your furnace is blowing out hot air, you may think that everything is just fine. The fact that your furnace is up and running, however, doesn't mean that it is necessarily working properly. If you notice any irregularities with your furnace's performance, it is very important that you have the professionally evaluated. A very loud furnace for instance, could be a sign of serious trouble.

Your furnace is going to make some level of noise during operation. There is a pretty clear distinction between normal operating sounds and new, strange noises, though. Contact a member of our team if you hear any of these sounds coming from your home heating system.

  • Grinding noises are most likely the result of metal scraping up against metal in the system. A very likely cause of this problem is a damaged blower wheel. The wheel may have come off of its mount, or it may be misaligned in some way. Before more serious damage is done, you should have the problem resolved. It could also simply be a case of insufficient lubrication on a moving part.
  • Booming sounds could indicate that there is a delayed ignition in the combustion chamber of your furnace. Essentially, this means that too much gas or propane is building up in this chamber, resulting in a small explosion when it combusts. You could also just be hearing your ductwork expand and contract as the temperature fluctuates, though. Only a professional can tell you for sure.
  • Screeching sounds could be the result of a slipped fan belt in the system. The belt may also be frayed, in which case it could well break entirely before too long. Replacing belts before this happens is a very simple and preferable alternative.
