ductless-blowerCentral air conditioning systems that use air ducts in order to distribute cooled air throughout homes are the most popular whole-house cooling option today. However, there are certain instances in which the installation of air ducts into existing properties is not really feasible. There are a lot of very old homes in our area, and many of them were constructed before the installation of air ducts was a common consideration. That doesn't mean that you have to rely on inconvenient and inefficient window units to cool your home, though.

With a ductless mini split in Southington, CT, you can cool -- and heat -- your entire house very effectively and efficiently. In fact, ductless mini split systems offer a number of benefits that traditional central air conditioners do not. If you are ready to replace an old air conditioner, or if you're finally getting serious about investing in a whole-house cooling solution, be sure to keep ductless mini splits in mind.

How Does It Work?

A ductless mini split system is a heat pump. This means that it will draw heat out of the air in the home during the summer via the evaporation of refrigerant and disperse that heat outside by condensing the refrigerant. That is just how any air conditioner works. However, because heat pump technology is used, the refrigerant cycle can be reversed, as well. That means that you can use existing heat in the air outside in order to heat your home with great efficiency in the winter.

Now, a ductless system doesn't circulate air throughout the house via ductwork. Instead, individual blower heads are installed throughout the house. Typically an outdoor unit will support up to 4 blowers. These blowers are tasked with cooling (and/or heating) the area in which they are installed directly. Each blower is equipped with its own designated thermostat.

What Are the Benefits of Going Ductless?

There are a  few to consider here. First things first, you are going to be able to both heat and cool your home with just one system, and that is an enticing benefit for  homeowners in and of itself. There is also the matter of energy efficiency to keep in mind.

The fact that ductless mini splits are heat pumps means that very efficient heating is part and parcel of the system. However, this is not the only factor affecting efficiency. Because there are no air ducts in the system, there is no risk of energy loss via leaking ductwork. Zone control is inherent with these systems, because each blower is controlled independently of the others. That means that you can heat and cool only those areas that you wish to, only as much as you wish to.

Indoor air quality is protected with these systems, as well. When air ducts leak, remember, it is not just the air leaking out that you have to worry about. Pollutants can also make their way into the system, and the ducts can then distribute those pollutants throughout the entire house. With a ductless mini split, you don't have to worry about that.
