AC Blowing Warm Air? Potential Causes

Delivering Quality Comfort to the Homes and Businesses of Hartford County and New Haven County

ThemometerEven after a long, cold, and snowy winter season, homeowners around here will admit that, sometimes, the heat of summer is just too much for comfort. Sure, there are plenty of nice days where you can get outside and enjoy the sunshine. When you're in your own home, though, you want to be cool and comfortable. That is why our air conditioners are so important to us, and why any problems with our home cooling systems are of such serious concern.

The worst case scenario with an air conditioning system is that it will break down entirely and fail to cool one's home at all. Not much better -- or so it would seem -- is an air conditioner that is blowing warm air. You are right in recognizing this as an alarming problem. However, it is not necessarily a serious problem. In fact, there are some potential causes of an AC blowing warm air that can be easily resolved by the homeowner his or herself. Keep this information in mind if you encounter this problem with your air conditioner in Farmington, CT.

The Good News

Let's start off with the good news, in this case meaning those problems that you can easily fix on your own. Before you go dialing our number to schedule professional repair services, there are a few items that you should check. These may sound a bit obvious to some homeowners, but others may rush to worry when their ACs are blowing warm air on one of the hottest days of the year.

First of all, double check your thermostat. You don't need to have an HVAC technician readjust your thermostat settings for you. Maybe you accidentally switched your AC over to a fan-only mode. This will leave the system to blow unconditioned air throughout the house. Maybe a heat pump even got switched over to its heating mode. Whatever the case, simply resetting the thermostat appropriately is  a simple fix.

Then there is the circuit breaker. Chances are that your indoor and outdoor AC units are running on separate circuits, as they draw enough power to justify their own designated source. If the breaker for the circuit that the outdoor unit runs on has tripped, then the indoor unit will still run. It will not, however, blow the warm air that you rightfully expect of your system.

The Not So Good News

Okay, you've checked the above items, and there does not seem to be an obvious solution to your problem. Well, unfortunately, you may have a more serious issue on your hands. One of the most concerning is a refrigerant leak.

Your AC evaporates refrigerant in the indoor coil, which allows heat to be drawn out of the air. If there is not enough refrigerant in the system, then it will struggle to cool the air effectively. If you notice warm air coming from your vents, and your outdoor unit is icing up, a refrigerant leak is unfortunately likely.

You may also have leaky air ducts. While not necessarily as urgent a problem as a refrigerant leak, leaky ducts will negatively affect your comfort, your budget, and the condition of your AC. Having them sealed up professionally can help to get your system back on track.
